Overview

Japan-based merchandise import and retail companies seek an entry-level Store Assistant Manager in the New Jersey location. This position is responsible for answering customer questions, taking orders, operating cash register, stocking and restocking merchandise and performing store cleaning, etc. Also, this position provides assistance and guidance to full-time and part-time sales clerks in the absence of the store manager as well as assisting the store manager. In addition, this job is responsible for the store’s daily opening and close including following proper procedures and maintaining security codes.


Description

FRONT AREA MANAGEMENT SUPPORT
· Assists Store Manager in supervising full-time and part-time employees.
· Manages work shifts of full-time and part-time employees.
· Identifies unpopular and unsold books, and provides instructions to employees for reduction of inventory.
· Ensures data of returned books to vendors in the system is updated, merchandise was returned to vendor, and the Company receives credits.
· Approves exchanges and store credits.
· Deposits checks to bank as needed.
· Provides training such as basic store operation procedures, performance reinforcement and enhancement, etc. to full-time or/and part-time employees as needed.
· Report all activities handled in absence of Store Manager and any problems to Store Manager.
· Handles complaints received from customers and solves problems as needed.
· Attends industry conventions; supervises and manages other employees during conventions.
· Assists in preparing monthly and annual sales targets, and monitors sales trends.
· Prepares and submits monthly reports of actual sales and prospects including convention reports and other
necessary reports to Store Manager.

HUMAN RESOURCES ADMINISTRATION SUPPORT
· Manages attendance records of full-time and part-time employees.
· Authorizes employee discounts.
· Attends performance evaluation meetings, and assists management with meetings.
· Works with Store Manager and Human Resources Officer as needed.
· Provide assistance to Store Manager in pay calculations, managing full-time employees’ vacation information, interviewing, processing of hiring, termination, crime prevention and disaster measures, etc.

CUSTOMER RELATIONS, CASHIER & SALES ATTENDANT
· Responds to questions and inquires from customer both in store and over the phone. Assists customers in locating merchandise, explaining products, and answering phone calls.
· Receives telephone requests and takes orders.
· Prepares cash register for the daily opening of the store.
· Performs store closing related work, such as calculating sales records and maintaining security codes after closing the store at the end of each day.
· Maintains high ethical standards in the work place especially towards customers.
· Performs sales of merchandise at the checkout counter.
· Places orders of requested products received by customers. Informs customers when products are delivered at the store. Prepares invoices for customers thereafter.
· Handles books requested to be exchanged and returned including accounting transaction, such as issuing vouchers for credit.
· Handles complaints from customers by explaining store policies and by appropriate solution. Report the result each time to Store Manager.

STOCK & INVENTORY
· Selects new merchandise or/and replenishes stock of assigned section based on instructions by Store Manager by following guidelines of order criteria and order budget.
· Reports order activities and sales of assigned section regularly to Store Manager regularly.
· Manages activities of receiving and sending orders of merchandises. Contact suppliers as needed.
· Receives, opens, and unpacks incoming shipments, records shortages, and corresponds with shippers to rectify damage and shortage.
· Arranges stock on shelves or racks in sales area and maintains store merchandise in an orderly manner.
· Displays merchandise on shelves, counters or tables to attract customers and promote sales.

OTHER & MISCELLANEOUS · May attend manager meetings.
· Responsible for communication with personnel at headquarters regarding Company’s information system and/or when other employees have questions regarding system.
· Orders and maintains store and office supplies.
· May receive, sort and distribute daily mail to appropriate personnel.
· Inputs and processes data for purchase, expense and invoice.

Handles questions from vendors.
· Seeks constant improvement, more efficient and less expensive ways and means in work processes.
· Performs special projects and other miscellaneous duties as assigned by management.
· Maintains high ethical standards in the work place.
· Reports all irregular issues and problems to management for solution.
· Maintains good communication with supervisors, other staff members and outside contacts.
· Complies with all company policies and procedures.
· Responsible for maintaining a clean and safe working area.

Requirements

Qualifications
Education & Work Experience
· High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or equivalent combination of education and experience.
· Must have at least one year of previous experience in a similar position at bookstores.

Tools & Equipment
· Fixed Phone, Fax, Printer, Calculator, Personal Computer, Cash Register, bar code reader, machine for creating bar codes, Shrink Wrap machine, label printing machine, dolly, etc.
· Software includes the use of Windows operating system and Back Office (stock management system)

· None. However, provides lead supervisory role to part-time employees in absence of Store Manager.
